TYPE OF WORK: School Project
LENGTH OF TIME: 5 Weeks
TOPICS: Research, Industrial Design, Product Design
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
For this project, I was tasked with developing a light for chosen location on The Ohio State University campus. I performed research on the type of light I wanted to make and the location I was placing the light. The location I decided was the Heirloom Café at the Wexner Art Center and I chose to place a pendant light in some of the dark spots of the café.
        RESEARCH
I conducted primary and secondary research for this project. My primary research interviews with the employees at the Heirloom café, personal observations, AEIOU observations, and an observational map of the space. The secondary research I conducted included researching types of lighting designs, colors of lighting, and aesthetics of café lighting.
I found that a yellow, soft light matched the aesthetic of the cafe best. Also, a pendant light fit the setting of the the dark areas in the Heirloom cafe.
        MOOD BOARD AND INITIAL SKETCHES
After gathering my research, I created a mood board to match the aesthetic of the café to the light I was creating.
From this mood board and my research, I began sketching forms of the light.
        PROTOTYPES AND CAD
I created scale and full sized prototypes out of Bristol paper and cardboard to practice making the form I chose for the pendant light.
        FINAL PRODUCT
The final product is a pendant light made out of aluminum and wood with cut outs to illuminate a soft, calming yellow light. This light allows for Heirloom cafe to have a slight calm ambience with more light provided for the users.
