TYPE OF WORK: School Project
LENGTH OF TIME: 3 Weeks
TOPICS: Research, Industrial Design, Product Design, Model Making
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This project entailed picking a location on or around The Ohio State University Columbus campus to place a bike rack. I had to conduct active research, iterate through sketching and prototype work, and create a 1/16 in scale model of the bike rack.
        Location research
I started by locating where my bike rack would be placed. I choose a small courtyard behind Celeste Lab and McPherson, two science labs on OSU's campus. I choose a part of the courtyard that already contained a bike rack because I think I could make a bike rack better suited for the space. I took pictures of the space from many angles and analyzed the different visual aspects and how people currently interacted with the space.
        IDEATION SKETCHES
I began creating quick iterations of forms inspired from my research in my location. I choose to focus on the specific visual aspects I identified in the space: contrasting vertical lines, patterned grids, and fencing.
From this iteration process I choose 3 iterations to expand on more in my next round of iterations.
        EXPLORATION SKETCHES
I took my 3 selected iterations and explored them some more through a page a iteration sketches. I choose to expand from 2D forms to different 3D views and configurations.
To explore further, I went into Autodesk sketchbook to create a pattern layout. This helped me visualize better how the bike rack would look in the space and in relation to itself. I tried 3 different pattern layouts and choose the "RANDOMIZED" layout would work best for the space.
        FINALIZED SKETCHES
I finalized the shape of the bike rack and created measurements of the 1:1 scale and 1:16 scale of the model.
        PROTOTYPING BUILDING
I built the 1:16 model from air dry clay and pray painted the pieces green after they had dried.
        FINAL PRODUCT
This is the final 1:16 scale model of the bike rack I designed for the courtyard between Celeste lab and McPherson lab. It is meant to be eye catching and embrace the nature aesthetic of the space.
